i'm thinking about applying for this, although i dont want to transfer over any direct debits and so wouldn't get £100 - not bothered about that.
Just wondered if when you switch, they close down your existing current account.
Basically, i'd like to open the account to get the 5% but don't want to transfer DD's or close my existing account.
is that allowed?

Before you do it I'd stronlgy recommend you have a quick browse through the forum to see just how many people have problems with Santander. They don't have a good reputation.
If your existing account is with another bank then you get the option to close it, but are by no means forced to. When I moved to them a few years ago the only thing required to get the decent interest rates wa the minimum funding requirement.0
