London

I've got tickets to see a concert at the o2 arena in may,
so i'm putting together a weekend in london.

1 - I know it's to early to book train tickets, but does anyone have any ideas as to how much about, it is to get from Liverpool to London?

2 - Any decent hotels quite central, that i can research?

3 - how far is the o2 outside of london

thanks

www.megabus.com do cheap fares from £1 each way Liverpool to London if you book early enough. In regard to the 02 it is in North Greenwich you may be best to look at hotels around the Waterloo, Southwick (near Thames Embankment) as on the Jubillee line tube direct from the 02. or if there are engineering works on the tube lines you can use the Thames Clipper to get to the 02. There is a Holiday Inn express near the 02 also. Greenwich itself is a nice area. Here is the link to the MSE post on staying cheaper at Holiday Inns. The Premier Inn County Hall is beside the Eye, the clipper boats and minutes from Waterloo tube and 6 stops on the tube to the 02. If you want budget accomdation there are Travelodges at Waterloo and Southwark both of which are fairly new hotels and may come up with cheap rooms in the sale.

Agreed on Southwark, good location 10 mins walk from Waterloo station and easy to walk across the bridge and you're in the City / West End.

As for trains, start researching now, look for fares for trains that are due to run in 12 weeks time. It's a good bet that those same fares will be available when it's 12 weeks before the date you want to go.

Also consider multiple routes, e.g. Getting the transpennine to Leeds and using East Coast trains from there.
  • You could get the megabus from Liverpool from Brownlow Hill by the Adelphi from £2:50 return.

Train fares to London from Lime St are reasonable. If you have a Virgin credit card then 1st class return per person starts from £54:40. Go to virgintrains.co.uk/vmoney there is the cheapest fares in the bottom right hand corner.

The O2 is out of London but for big concerts the best way to get there is by Thames Clipper service. A direct service runs from Waterloo pier (London Eye) direct to the O2 and it is far more comfortable than the tube. Log onto TFL site for further details.

Central London hotels try Strand Palace Hotel on the Strand.
    Arosfa Hotel on Gower street.
Imperial hotels in Bloomsbury (5 hotels different standards).
Rathbone hotel, Fitzrovia (ideally located for Arbutus see below).
    St Giles hotel.
Travelodge Covent Garden (not cheap for a travelodge).
    Piccadilly Hotel (back packers hotel).
Grange Hotels (varoius locations in central london).

To eat try the cheapest Michelin star restaurant in London. It is Arbutus on Frith St in Soho. 3 course set lunch menu for £16:95 (+ optional 12.5% service charge) is outstanding value. Just ask for a caraffe of complimentary iced tap water to keep your costs down. The quality of the food is outstanding and in many chain outlets around there a main alone starts at £17.

Visit Arbutusrestaurant.co.uk and check out the set lunch menu.

    Thanks for those replies.
I've realised i have £100 of tesco clubcard vouchers, which i can exchange for £400 worth of hotel vouchers.

I've done a bit of research on the hotels, that are available on the clubcard deals scheme.

And the Best Western Mostyn, comes in within our budget, what are your views on this.

Or there is the Mrecure London City Bank side.

Hubby like the Mostyn, remember, walking doesn't bother us.

    Don't hang around though.

Those vouchers will only be worth £300 after 6th December.

I have stayed at this hotel several times.

I can highly recommend it. It is at the top of Park Lane and only a 1 minute walk from Primark on Oxford Street.

It is the only 3* hotel I have stayed in, in central London that has chocolates on the pillow each day.

Can recommend the 3 Tuns pub across the road for a drink and the 1* Michelin restaurant Texture just a 2 minute walk away in Portman Sq.

The irony is with clubcard hotels a lot of central london hotels are not included in the deal but convert your clubcard points to Air Miles and these hotels can then be booked. Well worth checking which hotels you would have enough air miles for in central london.

    Thanks for those replies,

i've already changed the deals, so they should be coming in the next few days.
And the mostyn is included in the deals, i rang them up and checked.

    thanks
  • TheTrainline has a function on its website where you can type in the date when you want to travel and it will email you when tickets for those dates go on sale (but buy your tickets from the operator if you don't want to be charged a booking fee).

If you stay in the Southwark Travelodge, possibly the best way to get to the arena is to get a train to Charlton from Waterloo/Charing Cross/London Bridge. You can then get a bus which will drop you outside the O2.

It's probably going to be the mostyn, i like the look of it, and the location seems nice.

We plan on going to the o2 on the clipper.

    thanks
