"windows explorer has stopped working", vista

hi,

If this has been posted apologies I have done a quick search, if you could point me in the direction FAB.

otherwise.......................

I am running windows vista... all updates up to date.

EVERYTIME I try to open a file (and some programmes) It automatically goes to "windows explorer has stopped working". It will do this maybe 2-3 times EVERY TIME I try to open anything.
- by file I mean:
- control panel
- my computer
- my documents
- network setup - which I have to open on startup EVERY TIMEas the only way I can get sky to be accepted is to put in the default gateway EVERY DAY as it looses it (goes to blank) on shutdown.

I've tried clearing the memory and AVG runs every day so there are no virus'.

Any help please before I throw the laptop out the window??

If it was me, I'd look at my running processes to see if there is anything unusual, in task manager. If its not that it could be a recent piece of software installed, or a recent driver update or installation.

If it has only been doing this for a day or two, you could restore your PC back to the state it was in before the problem. Normally Windows can do this, leaving all your saved documents alone - it just undoes any updates and installations.

Other than that, I'm not sure. I could have sworn this has happened to me before, but I can't remember why or how I solved it unfortunately

If you haven't already, try Google and Yahoo answers with your specific problem to see if it brings anything up, I tried quickly but didn't really find anything relevant.

thanks, i have done a search (been doing it over a month now but it's getting worse). all it throws up is a glitch in a service pack install - grrrrrr.

just to update:
- i have run virus checker from safe mode --> nothing
- I now only have my virus checker and pointing device (its a laptop) open at startup --> no difference
- I have run sfc/scannow from a cmd prompt which has found corrupt files but can't fix them. If I try to open the log file I get "access is denied".

any ideas?

Sorry found that too funny for words. However, Have you tried running Malwarebytes to scan for problems.

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')

Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM QUICK SCAN then click SCAN
Remove everything thats found (needs to be ticked)
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds
If anything was found then do the exact same but run a FULL scan

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')

Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
If you get a message that you cant write to the hosts file then Press the SHIFT key, and whilst holding it RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (admin)

I get that occasionally with Windows7.

I get “windows explorer has stopped working” or “windows explorer is restarting”. Except it doesn’t restart and a manual restart just usually crashes again quickly.

Only a reboot sorts it out.

Fortunately it doesn’t happen often enough to be a major nuisance as you are finding. I wish I knew the answer to your problem.


As an aside, I find Windows Explorer under 7 generally much poorer than under XP

I have pretty much the same partitions, folders and files but 7 Explorer on a modern fast laptop is a dog at handling them compared to XP explorer on a six year old slow laptop.

It often takes 10 or more seconds to display the files in the right hand pane whereas it was instant in XP. And I have only selected three or four options such as date, size etc.

I have spent a painful couple of hours using Revo uninstaller to get rid of anything of no use as someone on another forum suggested. It looks from what they said that: O23 - Service: Nurago-Reporting-Service - nurago GmbH - C:\Program Files\Gacela\Nurago-Reporting.exe
O23 - Service: Nurago-Update-Service - Nurago GmbH - C:\Program Files\Gacela\Nurago-Updater.exe may have been the problem.

I thought I had removed this ages ago after one of my product testing websites asked me if I'd mind downloading it but I can't have done.

Anyways I also got rid of about 20 other random programmes and had a thorough system cleanup and it is opening files with no problems at all.



now can anyone fix my default gateway disapearing everyday???
