That is a good price. I have just bought my little boy the new leapster explorer which was 60.00 and I am really not sure if i would of been better buying him this instead. He will be 5 in December so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks Gillian

Do be aware that this isn't either of the latest models, the DSi or the DS XL.

Still a very good console though, but if you think your child will only want the lastest, you may need to think a bit..

Hi-I couldn't advise on the Leapster, but I have friends whose 5 year olds have a DS and they love them (always great for car journeys!).They just buy age appropriate games. Also, I think a DS tends to grow with the child -as they get older, you just buy the more appropriate games for their age.Is the leapster something that will last a few years-like a DS, or is it a kind of one off thing that will keep their attention for a few months ?
Hope this helps a little x

    Hi Gillian

My little boy has the old Leapster (can't comment specifically on the Explorer) and loves it. But I've just bought him the DSi for this Christmas. He's 5 in January. Personally I would go straight for the DS as you will probably end up buying it in a year or two anyway.

Ive bought my boy an explorer for Christmas too, he is 4 1/2.

I think the main diff between the explorer and the DS is that the explorer games are intended to support the school curriculum (without the kid knowing it) and help with reading / writing / maths etc. The DS is just a game and while it may claim to be 'good for you' (brain training, hand to eye etc) its only really been developed as a form of entertainment whereas the Leapster stuff is basedf on sound educational principles...

I think it does grow with them, apparently you set up a profile and it tailors the puzzles and questions to the childs age, plus you can download extra games etc from the internet for it...

I had a long think about the DS / Explorer question but ended up deciding I feel better myself about the explorer! Will report back on how long it hold his attention for in the new year - haha!
Stuck in a hole :(:(:( Just a step from getting out
  • Not sure what to do. Bought the ds earlier on toys r us,but now im hearing about this explorer which sounds good (and currently selling in argos for £53.99) Have reserved this anyway, will have a think about it...does anyone know if i cancel an order for toys r us, or does anyone else have any comparisons between the explorer and ds, my little boy will be 4 so dont know which one to go for???

Thanks everyone for all your advice. I think I might just stick with the explorer as this is his first ever computer console and I thought with the bigger screen and educational use it looked the better choice.
    Thanks again

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker I've been Money Tipped!
we have DS lite and DSi

we had lots of gameboy advanced games from when they were little and my youngest still plays them but I think I am right in thinking they dont fit in the newer DSi, so glad we still had an older DS lite style also.
