Joint Account @ HSBC

Hi Guys,

Was wondering if you could help me with this one? I've got a Joint Account with a family member at HSBC. Is it possible to ask HSBC and of course both of us agree to this, remove one person from the account so the other can just run it as a "sole account" keeping the same Account Number & Sort Code?

The account has an O/D of £50 just to act as a buffer incase a DD gets missed etc, would this be affected if one person was removed?

The account is always in credit, more than £500 a month goes in to keep HSBC happy and no charges on the account since its birth!

Many thanks,
David :)

if the account is in credit then and both parties agree then there would be no problem

both parties might need to sign a form, you just need to ask HSBC what to do.

HSBC would only agree this to be done if one person is dead
  • At the very least I would expect the bank would have to do another credit check for a "full" current account in the sole name (as they would only have the one person to chase for repayment of any future debt rather than two).

Using an extreme example to illustrate say Bill Gates has an account with unemployed John Doe and Gates decides to remove his name from the account - the bank may not wish to provide John Doe with a sole account, no matter how well run the joint account has been.

My ex wife and I did this a few years back, they did run a credit check on all parties if I remember correctly and made me apply for the account again.

Even then they just opened a new account in the end LOL
