Web Direct Debit Set Up

Does anyone know if there are rules about validating Web Direct Debit set up? Got a shock last week when someone had used my account details to set up 2 DD's one of which was to pay their Credit card balance lost most of my pay. Luckily I have the money back but Card Company and Bank won't take any responsibility and Card Company says they don't check with account holder. Not at all happy as I have had so much hassle with the bank over the past year by passing my address to my ex partner when they weren't on the account (not a nice outcome).

The only way to prevent this scenario is to instruct your bank to completely disable the DD facility on your account, otherwise you remain at risk of fraudulent and mistaken DD mandates.

Thank you the thread has proved really useful, it would appear that the credit card company didn't even check. I have a refer on my account now so that no DD's can be set up and I have reported this so it is being investigated and hopefully someone will get their comeuppance for being so nasty. Just goes to show that no matter how careful you are to protect your details you are never truly safe.
