My no claims bonus is over 2 years old. Who will insure me?

my last policy expired feb 2016 and I was worried that I had already been reset to zero due to some very poor advice received this time last year from Saga who said as a named driver my NCD would be maintained.
Any particular reason for resurrection a thread that is eight years old?0 -
Hi all,
Thanks for the great advice here, has really saved us a lot of money!
Can confirm that Co-Op will accept no claims discounts not used for upto 3 years (confirmed on their website). Co-op seem to have an unusual algorithm for calculating price compared to other insurers (a lot fewer questions!), so you may find a difference in price.
Admiral will also cover NCD not used for upto 3 years - however, their website states two years. If you contact customer services directly, they will confirm they can accept upto 3 years (confirmed on two different occasions).
Churchill - upto TWO years only.
Adrian Flux were helpful but significantly higher quote - worth a look if you are stuck.
For what its worth, was previously with Aviva, but they were not interested in re-insuring after a 2.5 year gap (and were really rude in the process!).
Hope that helps,

the coop will usually give you a £50 shopping voucher too, with zero hassle, as they send it out automatically.
to update my poor advice from Saga: they eventually paid me £100 after the intervention of the ombudsman but to be fair always admitted they were in the wrong
seems like this thread is alive and kicking and helping those in need, which is after all the name of the game0 -
Really, really useful advice. Thanks everyone above.
I have this problem because we went down to a single car just over 2 years ago. My wife has been a named driver on my insurance ever since with no accidents/claims in this period.
She turned 50 on the day Lockdown 1 was announced and we had planned to go car hunting. Due to Government coronavirus rules, car dealers etc. were, in effect, closed for nearly 5 months in total plus the essential journeys only rule putting the brakes (yes, I went there!) on testing vehicles. Since Lockdown 2 finished we have been offered a potential car to buy, so insurance needed to be priced up. Going through our files, I pulled out the "proof of NCD" letter only too find that it is dated from the 5th August 2018.
On phoning my wife's last insurer (Sainsbury's) I recieved a flat "no" to them making a COVID Lockdown allowance. The same was true on comparison websites (like the good MSE disciple I like to be). I then phoned Aviva who only accept 2 years from other companies or 3 years if the letter had been issued by themselves and no COVID allowance given.
On phoning ADMIRAL, absolutely no problem at all. They couldn't have been more helpful AND gave an extremely reasonable quote. They accept 3 years (in some cases longer) and Stacey was an absolute diamond.

I was diailoused I had 16 years full protected NCD but gave up driving for a while as it was so expensive and I had a job that I could commute to. My borther got a company car back end of 2019 and was a really good deal so i bough his old car. My shock when I found I had to start again my NCD despite have or thought i still had 16 years proected NCD built up over 20 years. The missing 4 years was only through changing polices mid term due to changing cars and having to start a year again or going traveling for 6 months. It's criminal that the Gov don't make rules that apply industry wide I tought i might lose some years like when you have accidents but to start complately again is so unfair - makes me wish I never paid to protect my NCD over thse years as it was pointless throwing oney away for nothing like all the add ons. To bring cost down i had to go TPF&T last year and then some jealous neighbour keys my car both sides as they didnt recognse it in the private car park and I lost my job so it didnt moe much.0

TPFT can be more expensive than Comprehensive so always double check both rather than assuming it'll be cheaper as its lower cover.
The discount NCD represents can be difficult to track down, and most companies are much more sophisticated in their pricing than they used to be (though I see Which? in the Jan 2021 maintains the kinds of numbers I used to know) however many do give circa half of the maximum no claims discount to people who join with zero but are a low risk driver otherwise. So whilst you will have lost out (most max their ncd at 5 years or its tiny benefits 5-9 years) of the NCD its not as bad as all gone.0
