VW Polo 2002 onwards

What do people think about the VW Polo?
I was looking at 2000-2002ish golfs at a VW dealer and saw the new polo (52 plate). Never really looked at one because my mum has one of the old ones and never thought about getting myself one too!
Anyone got much to say between the golf and polo?

It all boils down to whether you need the extra space. Both are excellent cars and the Polo is more nimble due ot the size and also more economical. However, a Golf will be more comfortable and better equiped. Its down to personal choice and your requirements.
Personally, I'd go for a 52 plate Focus. Same size as the Golf but a better car and for Polo money. If you found my comment helpful, please click the 'Thanks' button below :T0 -
I was offered a VW Polo E 1.2 (52 plate) with 12 months warranty for £5k from a VW dealer. The car only had 18k mileage.
What do you think I could get Focus wise for a similar price?0 -
My mother had a nightmare with her Polo. Went back so many times she actually had a courtesy car for a total of 169 days of the 240 she had the car. What a nightmare!!!One day I might be more organised...........
GC: £200
Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb0 -
I'm aware of someone with an 06 reg and the economy is terrible, despite what people say. When she spoke to the VW dealer he said its about averge...she gets around mid 30's...from a modern small car thats poor0

We have a 2002 model 1.2. It's big enough to take four adults comfortably and is ok for long journeys, its a surprisingly good motorway cruiser. It has been completely reliable over two years, but beware, the headlight bulbs are a nightmare to change. It took the garage twenty minutes to do, and they had to use tools that looked more like dentists' than mechanics to get at them. That's just unacceptable for a safety-related thing. Economy isn't too good either, again the garage told us mid 30s was about right. Basically it's a good car, but look at the alternatives first.0

Parents bought a low mileage 02 plate focus last year for £5000If you found my comment helpful, please click the 'Thanks' button below :T0 -
Polo is Ok, though Golf is much better, but I would (and have) looked elsewhere in the VAG group. Both SEAT and Skoda offer their take on the same car for considerably less, and in the case of the Ibiza or Leon they are generally better cars as well!
You will almost certainly get a newer/higher spec Ibiza or Leon than the equivalent Golf. For more info, try the Honest John website at https://www.honestjohn.co.uk if you click car by car breakdown on the left hand side you can select make and model from the drop down menus and get a full pro/cons list and recalls for every model. Well worth a quick read...0 -

was the dealer wearing a mask!
That is crazy, a very basic 4 year old car for that sort of money is overt the top. Be careful with modern VW's they are only average in reliability terms at best, and some of the trim quality in the polo leave a lot to be desired, the dealers are awful too.
I would consider something Japanese, e.g. a Honda jazz , or a yaris, much better in all areas.0 -
Funny you should say that. I am looking at a similar aged Honda Civic today, with 18k mileage. Got some nice extras too.
Similar priced from a honda dealer with warranty etc.
I've had jap cars in the past.0
