Natwest Advantage Gold

About five years ago my partner and I opened a joint Natwest Advantage Gold account so we could take advantage of the benefits. We have only just clicked that my partner already had an Advantage Gold account at the time of opening the joint account. We opened the joint account in person in branch and were not advised that we were doubling up and that the benefits could be enjoyed by both of us as it was ajoint account. It feels as though we have been paying £12.95 x 2 every month when in fact, we could have enjoyed the same benefits by maintaining one Advantage Gold account and reverting the other account to a basic level. My question is; is this mis-selling of a bank account and do I have any recourse to claim the five years woth of fees back, approx £770?

    It would appear that someone on here has debt issues with Natwest. Three threads in one day attacking Natwest!!

    You can try and lodge a complaint via the bank. Nothing to lose but a stamp and time.

    But as you don't appear to have had your own Advantage Gold account, then there was more of an overlap than doubling up. This itself would work against you, as they were and have been providing coverage for you.

    Seems to me a question of being more savvy than misselling.

  • Thanks Heng Leng. Maybe I should pose the question differently and ask whether my partner (he of the single and joint Advantage Gold accounts) has recourse to a refund?

    It's still a fairly weak argument as they were not both solely his accounts.

    The problem remains that you had access to coverage/services that you wouldn't have otherwise had. Also, you haven't paid more that you would have had you each had your own advantage gold accounts.

    I would personally downgrade his to a current plus a/c and chalk it down to experience.

    i agree, i would chalk this up to experience, afterall why is the bank responsible for you and your partner not checking what types of accounts you have, i know it may sound harsh but i would just treat it as lesson learned

    and as the others have advised his sole account would not have covered you ie your phone insurance/breakdown cover etc as only him, so its not like he had 2 identical accounts himself or that you had two joint accounts etc
