it's hard to say what is the problem without knowing the specific details of the laptop.
instead of using the iplayer download desktop (I think it is pretty intensive on the CPU) you can download the TV shows from iplayer to 'windows media player', that (at a guess) wouldnt stutter0 -
may be a lack of ram , do you know how much ram the laptop has ??Ex forum ambassador

it has 3GB DDR3 RAM memory0

right click on the desktop
select gadgets
drag the CPU/ram 'gauge' onto the desktop
then watch the same movie in a non full screen window and watch the ram/CPU load0 -
that should be enough RAM. what about the CPU the OS (win7 ?) and GPU.
I also have an acer computer and it came with stuff like game centre and google toolbar and 3 antivirus trials which I uninstalled and that could help you with system resorces0 -
Yer i'm on Windows 7, the ram is fine , i made sure the PC was running through more than one processor. I don't know what the GPU is, i might try uninstalling a few things got MacFee anti-virus which looks a bit of a pain in the !!!!. maybe its just faulty.0

It could be that your processor is slowing down as it's not being used very heavily. I've a Core i3-530 which adjusts it's speed via a piece of software that came with an Asus motherboard. Other CPUs - say Core i5 and Core i7 models- can do this via the processor alone. This can cause problems when playing videos ( or games - both Mass Effect games suffer with conversations going out of sync if my CPU is set to anything other than its standard ratings ).0

yes macafee is not very good but dont end up with no antivirus though, if you havent bought any then download and install microsoft security essentials its free antivirus.
is it only video in iplayer desktop that stutters? does it also stutter is you download it to media player?
if you do think it's faulty then it will be under warranty so should be an easy swap/fix.0 -
think i might try uninstalling Macfee and seeing what happens thanks for all the advice guys!!0
