Before or After??

Sorry a bit confused here!

Do i open a co-op cashfinder account before or after i go bankrupt???

I do have a Nationwide flex acc in the black but dont want to continue to use it incase that will be closed.

Been reading so many of the posts and they do help, I don't feel so alone now.
Thanks.

    Hi

It's up to you really, peole have done both and its been fine, just make sure if you are opening it pre- BR you let them know you will be going BR so they open the correct account. Personally, we opened ours about a week prior to our BR and we mentioned it to the OR when we had a quick chat with them on the phone on court day.

As for your Nationwide Flex Account, just leave that alone, obviously declare it on the forms. But ours was not closed by Nationwide, just downgraded to a cash card account (which recently has become a cash card plus, visa debit card) so its been handy to have use of that account too. Others have had theirs closed, but you never know!

You will never be alone here, so any more questions or if you just need to chat, there's always a friendly face here. Good luck.

  • Thank Angie, much appreciated.
Ye I will leave the nationwide account open as i have no debts with then.
I'm just trying to get things organised before i actually go bankrupt to i hope make things go a bit smoother.
The wheels are in motion though and that feels good that i am taking control of my life.
To think of coming close to suicide for £20k debt. crazy...

No worries :) It was easier for us to arrange the co-op account pre-BR, gave us a chance to get the DD's, wages ect transferred over. Nationwide was a bonus really, fully expecting it to be closed, so glad it wasn't.

Glad you feel some control now too, I know BR is a last resort for most but you obviously have been through the mill from what you have said but I can tell you from experience it will get better.
  • Wow, there are NO co-op banks north of Glasgow!! which is 125 miles away from me. Still there is a Barclays 25 miles away so I guess i better open the basic cash account there!

  • I think the odd person has had a problem opening an account pre bankruptcy, but on the whole you shouldn't have a problem.

I opened mine a week before and made it very clear that I would be BR on x date. So far I have had no problems, that was with co-op.

Its surprising how all this can make you feel.

As Angiepange says, reading the posts on here, it looks as if you can do either, re opening a bank account. I personaly, opened mine, before i went bankrupt, because , like others say, everything was up and running for when i went bankrupt, Really good advice. I did'nt have to worry about my pay, ( just the lack of it ), and all my DD' s were set up etc. The OR is'nt too interested in basic accounts. I'm sure i probably told the bank i was going bankrupt, but they were'nt too interested either, thank goodness.

You can also make use of online banking, and they also provided you with a paying in book and envelopes, which you can use to pay in cheques etc, at any post office. I've not had any problems, other than lack of funds, but they have been very understanding, so far, phew.

    Keep posting

Opened mine 10 weeks before going BR, best thing I ever did, all my DD`s, SO`s and incomes were going in and out of this account by the time my BR hearing took place. That was 12 months ago and the account has been running fine since then, also I have never been in to a branch as there is not one near me, either do it on line or deposit anything in via the post office.

I am also thinking now i should give up college i started last month and try and get some sort of job.
Trying to survive on my saas loan (oh more borrowning) and a small bursary just isnt working, not to mention the stress of everything.
My other half is still trying to get work since we closed the shop end of august and wont get job seekers allowance as my income ie bursary and saas loan is £7 over the limit so basically we have to survive on £109 a week..
Do now get housing benifit and rates relief but thats it.
i guess even if i can get a part-time job i could get working tax credit..
Ive had ME for 9 years now so working full time is just to much.. ooh i could write all night lol...
