Getting stuff of old Hard Drive

Hello to you people of great wisdom.
I have replaced my old hard drive which I just couldnt get to boot up(win xp)
with a nice big new one and put the old one in an external caddy. Now how can I get my emails ( outlook) of of the old drive, I can access the drive and get all my old files and folders but how do I get my mail out of outlook?
If any one can help I would be greatfull.
Thank You

File, Import and then navigate to the location of your old e-mail directory.

If it is Outlook Express, search for .dbx files on your old drive. Otherwise try searching for inbox or outbox etc.

  • Usually the data files are stored here by default:

    C:\Documents and Settings\your name\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\some random numbers\Microsoft\Outlook Express

There should be a few .dbx files there, this is all your info off OE.

  • Thanks Goldielocks
I didnt use Outlook express but used Outlook as my email programe, does that make it any different to retrive?

  • hmmm don't think it makes much difference.

If you go to Inbox > Tools > Options

    Maintenance tab

In the 'Cleaning up messages' section - there should be a 'Store Folder' button - this tells you where your data files are stored. Mind you I am going by my OE - I guess Outlook is a similar layout...

Outlook stores files in a different format to Outlook Express.

    .pst files for Outlook

    .dbx files for Outlook Express

  • Try looking on your old drive for the files - thank you Espresso for clarifying that it will be .pst files for Outlook.

Did you use the path I suggested?
If no joy, do a search for .pst files on the disk & you should spot 'em!

  • No luck yet Goldielocks, the only .pst files a search comes up with is an email back up I made about 2 weeks ago which I have on CD anyway , unfortunatly that still dosent have the last few weeks emails which would be nice to get back.
