Modems...

How do I know if my new PC has a modem? My parents only have dial up and I suspect that this PC doesn't have a modem..Is there a way to find out?

Yes It has a plug for a phone line to go in the back.

Expresso, there isn't the modem present...any ideas? Do I need to buy one and if so, is it easy to install an internal one??

Are you sure that the socket is for a phone line? An Ethernet socket looks very similar but is slightly bigger.

If you have a modem fitted, it should be shown in device manager.

Note that the 2 sockets in albatross's picture are very similar - the modem one is the smaller of the 2, you may have a network card installed (the larger one). Generally modems come as add-on cards - the ones in the slots lower down at the back of the case whereas network cards can be there, but are often higher up the backplate, next to USB connections.

As long as you get a modem with an installation CD (for the modem drivers), they are easy to fit, you just need a philips, crosshead screwdriver and the ability to remove the case or side panel from the PC.

If you're not too happy about taking the cover off the PC you can still get external modems - ones which either plug into a serial port or USB port.

It only has one and it has a pic of a telephone next to it, so I am assuming that that is definitely a modem one.
As its not in the device list, I am assuming there isn't one fitted :( although the Internet connection wizard did let me add a modem? Didn't work though...I'm obviously not very technical when it comes to hardware so I am a bit peed off and daunted at thought of having to add one myself.

If it is a laptop/notebook they often have a socket but no modem fitted internally.
