Budget California holidas?

Options
Looking at going to Califiornia next Aug/Sept. We've been to Orlando a few times and have always been happy with the budget travel packages eg travelcitydirect, jetsave etc
But is there anyone who does similar cheap packages to California? I've started searchng and not found anyone obvious yet.
I know there is the DIY option and we're also looking at this

Best way to do on a budget is to get a flight and a car with your own bookings.

Then you can travel around seeing things taking advantage of turn-up rates at motels (usually $40 upwards per night).

August is peak travel time from the UK, air fares were as high as £700 this summer so if you must travel then book sooner rather than later, there are no charters to California. You can certainly find motels on a daily basis but probably not in busy places with limited stock of hotels, I spent a dreadful night in a very damp room in Monterey, you may need to stay slightly outside the touristy places if travelling at peak times without advance reservations. San Francisco is also a problem, much more expensive for accommodation due to demand, if you liked Jetsave, they certainly offer holidays to California as well.

Monterey is pricey, we stayed just outside Monterey in Seaside, much cheaper and only 5 mins drive from Fisherman's Wharf.

No, there is a Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey too!
It's where the whale-watching boats depart from.

  • Hi guys, I would like to ask you for information about Hollywood and film studios.
We are planning to fly to LA and stay for one day to see Hollywood and studios. What is best thing to do?Any tips? Do we need to book in advance on line to see studios?
Do we turn up at some gate and buy tour? Should we drive there from hotel?
    Please advise.
