Santander Bank charges problem

We opened up an A & L account, one direct debit didnt get paid so we put the money in to cover the bill and charge, the account read 0.00, so as far as i know it had been dealt with.I shut down the account on line. Then we started getting letters, saying we owed £85. we complained by phone and received a letter outlininghow to complain. then we get another £85 direct debit unpaid. They have now been taken over by santander.
I have tried to view my acount on line but their site has been closed for maintainance for ages now,i can not see my account dtails. We can not afford these steep charges, it used to be £30 on banks before, but £85, can anyone tell me how we stand ?
remember i cancelled the account so the 2nd dd should not have taken place anyway.
