How safe is it to buy second hand appliances

My parents are considering buying a second hand kitchen for a second property with appliances, but what with all these fires and damage due to faulty appliances, is it worth getting them checked out before purchasing?

I would expect second hand appliances should generally be safer than new ones because if there was a faulty electrical component which could start a fire you would expect it to do that within the first few months of use.0

Well since the change in the law, I believe all portable appliances all are supposed to be PAT tested by the vendor before they can be sold...not sure if this applies to fitted appliances though.Debt 2007 £17k

Current Debt approx £7.5k
Target - to pay off all debts by 2020 :A0 -
I don't think it applies either to fitted appliances or to goods sold by private vendors.0
