Can't use headphones on PC

Got a newish PC and my desktop speakers are plugged in the back - they work fine. On the front there is a headphone socket with a picture of headphones but when I plug them in there is no sound through them. What do I have to do to get it working, please?

Had the same prob with mine, was told cannot connect both speakersockets, only one or the other?? anyway got them to fix it, it can be done but that is how they set them. Another way is to buy extension speaker lead so you can bring the rear conn to the front, then buy a double adaptor so you have both options at the front, altough if the computer is bought new get on to the supplier and request that they sort it.
Also not sure if using both computer speaker conns is possible as I don't think you can have 2 lots of speakers doing different jobs at the same time, but I am sure someone with more tech knowledge than me will soon say if that is not the case.

Ah, I just thought of something - I've got a headphone splitter I can use...just plug this in the back and that should do it.

Not ideal but serves the purpose. Thnaks for giving me the idea mate.

PS I bought it via the internet so can't be ar$ed to send it back just for that - everything else is great with it.
