just be careful if you buy an ide to sata adaptor....I bought one for the same reason as you to install in my 5150 case....I should have bought the "right angle" type not the inline one.....it wont allow you to put the sides back on....went for a different solution....purchased a USB2/firewire enclosure from SVP for about the same price as an adaptor....best idea ever....now the hard drive is portable....and can go between machines and laptops....great for all your media...

Have put drive temp.in spare dvd. slot as suggested.Worked ok comp. recognised the two partitions E drive with some old stuff on, and Fdrive which was empty. Used Acronis 8.0 to copy full image of Cdrive 11.9gig to F drive.Problem is it only copied 9.74gig.What did i do wrong? I expected a full ghost image.

It looks like you did the best thing using usb.Did the enclosure come with all the leads etc.?.Can you remember the number? Thanks for your reply
  • ACRONIS compresses the image by default when it creates it.

You can choose the compression level for a backup archive:
    • None - the data will be copied without any compression, which may significantly increase the backup file size
    • Normal - the recommended compression level used by default
    • High - higher backup archive compression level
    • Maximum - maximum backup archive compression, but it will take longer to create.

Thanks Toxteth. As you can tell i am a bit of a duffer. What i need to know is that it has copied the op system, xp2 over as i didnt get cd,s from Dell,it is hidden on C Drive.Where can i look on F drive to see if it there.Going out now so wont be back till tomorrow. Thanks again
  • If you have done a full back-up, it's exactly that. A mirror image of the drive you copied, so it will include the operating system.

Yes as said you can mix them, although more recent boards, some dont have ide connectors at all. I have a system that although does have ide I use sata including the DVD drive. I prefer sata due to thin cable length and they should be slightly faster than IDE

The recent intel/amd motherboards all have IDE interfaces for your information.;) The IDE interface will be around for quite some time.

Also, you will not usually see the speed difference since it is just the interface speed (i.e. the speed data is transferred between the device and the motherboard) which is faster.

    SATA I = 1.5Gb/s
    SATA II = 3.0Gb/s
    UDMA 5 IDE = 100Mb/s

The fastest current hard drives can only read/write at around 100Mb/s max, however, SATA II has the greatest theoretical max transfer rate, and allows for greatest headroom, should hard drives become faster. ;)

@COVKID, it is best to connect the IDE hard drive via IDE. Only use the IDE to SATA adapter as the last resort, but I'm sure your motherboard will have an IDE connector anyway.
