protecting DVD to stop it getting damaged

My grandson plays a game on my computer that requires the DVD to be in the drive when playing, to stop piracy I imagine.
However the DVD is getting scratched so I thought I would copy it and let him use the copy.
I used Nero to copy the DVD but you probably know the outcome, this is a copy you cannot play the game.
How does the game know the DVD has been copied?
Any suggestions?

This program (free) http://www.slysoft.com/en/virtual-clonedrive.html will copy the disk to the HDD & the game (should) think that it is the disk & play the game.0

Should be OK provided there is no copy-protection built into the disc that needs to be copied. I understand (ahem) that Slysoft produce another tool that could be used in conjunction with VCD that would probably do the job on *any dvd* or you could try another of their products which has a bit of a *wild dog* reputation (hints) provided you are not talking the really awkward Starforce system. This program (free) http://www.slysoft.com/en/virtual-clonedrive.html will copy the disk to the HDD & the game (should) think that it is the disk & play the game.My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016).

But there is
ok that wasn't the exact error message but I thought it was easy enough to understand.this is a copy you cannot play the game0 -
there is software available that removes the DDR (or the copy protection notice), also there are ways to burn the disk in such a way as for it to remove the encryption. Have a look at afterdawn.com or Google for "copy protection removal", I cannot go into too much detail as such discussions are strictly prohibited on MSE.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

Don't people use emulators for that kind of thing? Such as Alcohol 52. Try to avoid install Toolbars etc if you can.0

Alternative suggestion is get a second DVD ROM drive, either internal or USB, they are pretty cheap now (£20 for a USB one from ebuyer, probably this is less than the cost of the game), and leave the DVD in there permanently. Sellotape it shut if necessary.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0

Which game is it, I might have a link that will enable him to play the game without a CD/DVD in the computer1: Lloyds Loan: 1900/0 --- 2: Lloyds CrCa: 700/800 --- 3: Lloyds OveD: 500/0 --- 4: BoS OveD: 500/0 --- 5: Clydesdale OveD: 500/0 All overdraught facilities cancelled0

You can get patched executables that replace the original .exe so you don't need to put the disc in the drive all the time. GameCopyWorld (.com) is one such site that provide these executables.
I wouldn't condone piracy but if you have the original copy with a patched exe I don't see how this could be considered piracy.0 -

I think this is definitely one of the better directions to go, can we avoid second guessing and have the name of the game from the OP so we can look up exactly what controls it has and point the OP towards a virus free no-CD patch?0
