DD has just bought HP netbook with win 7 home premium and needs to load xp based school programs onto it. How is the best way as it currently will not look at it/them.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

7 pro also allows the xp mode.
I really don't understand what "it currently will not look at it/them." means, i can only assume you mean 7 can see the setup/exe files, but they won't install?
try right clicking the setup file>properties>compatability>run this program in compatabiltity mode for XP SP3Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -
Mr Piper, please could you be a little more explicit about what actually happens when you try to install these programs - like error messages.peter_the_piper wrote: »... it currently will not look at it/them.
In addition to the previous knowledgeable suggestions, it would probably also be a pretty neat idea to ask your DD's klass teecher, for this cannot be a unique occurrence, now that Windows 7 has been out for over a year!0 -

The easiest way is to try "compatibility mode", as DatabaseError suggests. Also, you may need to right-click the executable and choose to "Run as Administrator". I've also found that some installers designed for XP have a problem with UAC. Turning this off (via Control Panel / User Settings or something similar) temporarily while you install the software might be a good idea.
Failing that, you could try XP Mode if you have the Professional or Ultimate versions of Windows 7. If that doesn't work, and you have a spare XP licence, you could install XP on your hard drive alongside Windows 7 or use virtualisation software such as VirtualBox to create a Windows XP virtual machine inside Windows 7.0 -

Get the school to updated the antiquated software saying you're not willing to risk using a 9 year old operating system with more security holes than swiss cheese.0 -
I call Analogy Failure! Swiss cheese is not usually regarded as a secure medium...
You are so wrong. I can think of no safer place to store a selection of holes than Swiss cheese, hidden amongst the other holes they would never be found.Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0
