Epilators?

Options
My wife wants an epilator, basically as an alternative to waxing. She's never had one before, so the idea of £50 for the basic models seems like an expensive experiment...

Anyone know of any good value ones \ hints & tips on good models?

I have a Philips epilator with pain softener, it has prongs that prod the area first. You can also get ones with ice packs which ice the area to numb it a bit first. (I've had a braun one too)

I've been using epilators for years now and it doesn't really hurt too much, however I have never shaved my legs to start with so my hair is fairly fine. I also have a fairly high pain threshold!

It you wife has dense dark hair, it will hurt, it she has fine hair, not so bad. The more you use it the better it gets and the hair will grow back finer.

Does she know someone who has one that she can try it first!

    Argos start from £34.99

  • I think that my pain threshold is quite high. When I tried an epilator it hurt like a demon and I bled ... a lot.

I was perhaps a bit ambitious in starting with my bikini line.

I have an epilator and its fine. Hurt a bit the first time I used it, but its doesn't hurt a bit now. My pain threshold is probably average-high, my hair is reasonably fine though.
I use it everywhere that needs de-hairing, but I didn't start with bikini line....AB is *much* braver than me!

Wow, I didn't even THINK of that side of things (I think my wife was more worried about whether it would do the job....)

    Will pass on the tips...

  • I've a Braun one cost about £55. Hurt like he*l first few times but quite painless now, however can only use it on legs, used it on underarm and was in agony for a week. Mine has a bikini line trimmer as well which is really good, as wouldn't even attempt to epilate there!!

  • Don't do it!!!!

They are machines of torture...and to add insult to injury it just snapped the hairs off instead of removing them!

I had to throw mine away...

I suggest waxing for better results - look for a local beauty therapy college that needs practise models, or try the DIY sugaring recipe that is somewhere on this site... much cheaper, fun and sticky and edible!!

Have to agree with the 'machines of torture' description - I've been through childbirth - twice - and nothing compares to the pain of epilating! I also tried all the usual, glass of wine and a couple of paracetamols beforehand too. But jeeeeeeeezzzzz, the pain was too much, and I am sure it sucked up skin on my underarms. Then there's the awful ingrown hairs to contend with. I also found that my legs resembled a plucked chicken for a few days afterwards. :(

Now, I just stick to shaving. :o

I don't use either of those!

I try and do it just after getting out of shower, if possible, as it makes it a little easier to do underarms and bikini line, but its not painful even if I've not been in the shower.
