External hard drive advice for novice

I'm looking to buy a 250gb external hard drive and wondering which is the best value one to get? I'm looking at the buffalo drivestation 250gb and seagate 250gb which i can both get around £75 mark.
I'm looking for one which is quiet and reliable. Which of these 2 are the best value do you think? or maybe there is a better one i could go for?

Your advice is appreciated, sorry i'm a novice when it comes to pc's.

thanks.

  • I'd go for the Seagate. They have a good reputation for reliable hard drives.

Just a thought, but if you're not afraid of a little DIY, you can normally build your own external drive with very little knowledge and save yourself a few pounds. All you need is to choose a standard HDD from your favourite source (dabs.com, ebuyer.com, ebay etc) and pick up an "enclosure" or "caddy" for it. These cost about £20 at most and basically are a box with power supply, fixtures and USB or Firewire output. You can definitely pick one of them up at the above sites or search around for the cheapest ones. It's literally a case of plugging the ribbon lead from the caddy into the back of the drive and screwing it together.

And I agree with Chippy_Minton, Seagate drives are hard to beat for value and reliablility. The barracudda ones especially, although an old model, are fantastic.
Life in this world is, as it were, a sojourn in a cave. What can we know of reality? For all we can see of the true nature of existence is, shall we say, no more than bewildering and amusing shadows cast upon the inner wall of the cave by the unseen blinding light of absolute truth, from which we may or may not deduce some glimmer of veracity, and we as troglodyte seekers of wisdom can only lift our voices to the unseen and say humbly "Go on, do deformed rabbit again.....it's my favourite". © Terry Pratchett in "Small Gods"
