Can I return something I have already mended?

I recently bought a dress. Whe I got it home, I realised there were small tears in the sleeves. Because I really liked it, and because I knew there were no others left in the shop, I decided to try and mend it. I thought it wasn't worth trying to get some money off as they only usually give 10% for a fault and it is non returnable.

So I did a pretty good job of mending the sleeves and put it on to go out. Just as I was about to leave the house, it split along the seam of the skirt. (Bear in mind, this dress is 2 sizes bigger than what I normally wear - there really was such limited availability). I can't mend this - the fabric is torn, not the stitching.

I am gutted because I did really like it and I spent so much time getting it right and I have next to no chance of getting the same dress again.

So can I return this even though I have already mended it? Should I just take it back and not even mention the sleeves? I have googled this but can't find any answers - please help!

Well, there is no harm in trying. Personally I wouldn't mention the sleeves.

in mending it you will probably be deemed to have accepted the dress and this extinguishes your right to a full refund. You are still entitled to the second tier rights though, partial refund, repair, replacement. In this case, with an unrelated fault I would see those rights being very close to a full refund. In any event, you will only lose your right to a full refund, if they know you have fixed the sleeves. As this work was entirely unrelated to the later, more substantial problem, I'd keep stchum and go for the full refund. Or as for a replacement. You never know they might be able to magic one up from some warehouse or something.
  • depending on how obvious your mending is, id try taking it back and just not mention.

deny all knowledge if it gets noticed.
It only takes a second to say 'Thanks, you just saved me a few quid!'

  • |I suppose it would depend a lot on why the seam split on the skirt.
  • Thanks guys.

I will try and take it back on Wednesday - probably not mentionthe sleeves!

I think the skirt split because there doesn't seem to be enough fabric trapped in the stitching, which also caused it to fray - as I said, it was plenty big enough.
