If you are doing all the chimneys and repointing then that sounds ok but just for two caps then you are being taken for a ride imo.

price was for (IIRC) 5 cowls, the repointing and labour. I'm assuming he has also added a bit in recognition of the fact that access to the chimney requiring repointing is not as straightforward as normal (that chimney is at the rear of property. garden is basement level, meaning roof is effectively 3 storeys up. there are 2 large bay windows which protoud out over the garden, and a drainpipe and aerial in the way of the the only real space to lean the ladder. the aerial is old and he has been told he is more than welcome to take it down if it will make access easier as it isn't actually connected to anything. the drainpipe is a more necessary feature :D )

the alternative is to put a ladder up on the step outside kitchen door (max 4ft wide before the steps down into the garden begin) and then use another ladder to get across the main roof to the chimney). acces to the other chimney is more straight forward as it can be reached from front of house and is therefore effectively only 2 storeys up

    2 x caps = £16 each retail + 1hr labour @ £30 = £62 !!! so call it £70 tops

You are talking about capping the pots, I'm talking about closing a chimney completely, removing the pots, installing 2 airbricks and slabbing over.
