XBOX360 DVD ROM Drive type for a 2006 Week 30 unit?

I wanted to work out what make of drive and firmware was in mo Xbox 360. I found these instructions for working out when the XBOX 360 was made.
From this I think mine was made in China in 2006 week 30 I know this from the 630 part of the serial number I can view thorugh the window on the packaging. I did not want to open the box until I knew the make and model of the DVD drive.

Serial Number = LNNNNNN63005

Does anyone know what sort of drive and Firmware would be inside the unit. I've not opened the box?

I've sqeezed the box and read the date of manufacture as 2006-03-29

Anyone know what type of DVD Drive might be in this? I think it will be a Samsung or Early Hitachi unit, well I hope so.

Sorry for all the daft questions, my first console so all a bit new to me!

Any good places in London to have firmware for the XBOX 360 DVD drive "updated":rolleyes: welcome.

Are there any good threads on this subject on MSE? I've tried the search option no luck.

Here the info to read serial numbers...

Unique Per Console Numbers
L = Production line in the factory
NNNNNN = Xbox in the week
Y = Year (last digit)
WW = week of the year *
FF = Factory # (05 & 06 are China, 05 appears to supply Europe and 06 supplies North
America)
MM = Month
X = unknown at this time
" " = Actual Text
* Factory 05 is a week ahead of factory 06 for the 2005 year. This means any 360 made
during the last week of December 2005 should have a WW=53 in the serial #.
Serial Number = LNNNNNNYWWFF (Source: www.xbox-linux.org)
Product ID = XXXXXXXXLNNNNNNYWWFF
Motherboard = XXXXXXXXXXXXYWWX
Console ID = XXXXXXXXXXXX
Wired MAC = Unique 12 digit (hex, meaning each digit has the possibility of being a value
of 0-F)
RF Module = XXXXXXXXXXXYWW
DVD Serial # (Hitachi-LG) = YMM"HG"XXXXXX
DVD Serial # (Toshiba- Samsung) = X"RCY"XXXXXX

    Your best bet is the xbox hacker or xbox scene forums. They've got forums dedicated to changing firmware.

    With regards to knowing what drive without opening the box, I've not read anything where you can do such a thing. There might be, I've only ever read articles whereby you open the dvd tray to see.

    I've left doing mine so far. I'm going to wait until (if ever there will be) there's a homebrew solution. Also Microsoft from what I've read, can detect if you've changed the firmware, so people may find themselves banned from Xbox Live. No one really knows yet though.

    Thanks for the pointers, I had a look as you suggested. I think I have toopen the box! The firmware is now stealth so they cannot tell if you've modded the box. New hardware hitting Australia and Asia has newer DVD drives which cannot (yet) be modded.

    The solution is home brew now. pop the drive out, connect to PC via SATA backup old firmware, calc new firmware, flash and go from what I've read. Might use a £40 or £55 fit while you wait company.

    Any recommendations welcome
    Seth.

    Ah no, I meant homebrew in that the firmware upgrade will only let you play backups, nothing more. I'm gonna wait until someone figures out how to get unsigned code to work on it, ie something like Xbox Media Center.

    Something I'll do myself. Fully modded my older Xbox, quite enjoy playing around with stuff like that.

    Ah ok, yeah I remember people mentioning about stealth firmware when I last looked a while back, didn't realise it is now available. Didn't know about the new drives either, although I know there's now, or soon to be a slight revision to the original 360.

    Oh I see what you mean that would be nice. I'd love a nice XBOX 360 MC as you describe.

    Thanks again for the tips.
