Custom made clock hands?

Hi all,

I've decided that I'm going to make a teacup clock ("A what?", I hear you ask), yes a teacup clock. One of these.....

http://blog.craftzine.com/archive/2007/08/tea_cup_clock.html

Basically, my fiancee is mad about vintage teacups and as we're having an english tea party theme to our wedding next year, I thought I'd make one of these as a surprise present for her on the day. (I know, odd present, but believe me, she'll love it!)

Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone knows any companies that custom make similar looking hands to those in the picture. I'd like to have our initials machined on the hands as well, otherwise I probably would have had a crack at crafting them myself.

Alternatively, if anyone could offer any tips on how to make clock hands then I would be very appreciative.

Many thanks in advance.

Tredders :D

  • That'll be quite a large clock .. if youre going quartz movement...
dont know if a quartz battery movement is up to turning hands like that ..

parhaps there are more powerful movements out there, but i doubt a regular one will be up to it .

plenty of clock forums on the net ..ask there ..they will only be too glad to help.

    all the best.markj

We painted a large clock on the wall and used Plasticard to make the hands (Google it). We glued them to the hands supplied with the clock movement. The minute hand is 18" long and we had to balance it using a strip of steel glued to the back of the short end to get it to turn.

You know, I was sat for approximately 4 hours last night, googling my little socks off and never came across this website! Cheers for this though. Not only do they sell the large hands, they also sell the high torque movements for them. Fantastic job.

Thanks to all for the advice as well. I know it will be quite a heavy item so I'm still trying to figure out where I'm going to put it at the wedding reception so it doesn't fall on anyone....... Hmmmm, maybe just behind the Mother in law!!! :D

  • I think I would make the backing board in the shape of a teapot, unless you specially want a circular one.

Signmakers can cut perspex sheet to shapes.

I think you should use spoons as hands.

I was thinking about this, but think I went off the idea as I wanted to go for a classic type look and a teapot shape didnt match with this.

I like this idea as well, but I also really like the antique look hands.

    Ooooh, decisions! :D
  • Great job! how it's doing now with your idea, any results.
