Usually they lay you off on about the 23rd December.

Before Christmas. Depends how busy your sorting office is though. In mine our contracts were a week shorter at the start and end than most others I saw mentioned as it was a quieter one (do a search for last years thread to give you an idea). They did keep me and 1 other person on an extra week though so that was good.

ETA: They'll most likely tell you and give you the contracts on the recruitment day.

Do NOT worry! (and that's strange coming from me considering what a wreck i turn into in interviews)

They are the easiest things in the world. Go as smart as you like, but know that most people there will likely be wearing jeans and trainers! Its not so much an interview as checking all of your documents are filled in etc and going over the available shifts etc.
You'll also proobably watch a short health and safety vid.

I came to this part of MSE for another reason and came across this thread. Have just applied :) I put down for the hours of 22.00 - 06.00 I wish I had put down any time, I feel like I have limited my chances now!

Do they ever keep people on permanently after your contract is up?

I received an email from Royal Mail inviting me to attend the registration event on 12th Oct  2 days time!!!

I have read through everything and does this mean I've probably got a job because they are asking me to bring along lots of documents and a passport size photo :o
  • I worked Christmas at the Royal Mail two years ago and as regards to the interview, I did not have one, they just arranged a group session everyone had to attend to watch a safety video and say what shift pattern they wanted.
Some people who started the Christmas work earlier such as in November were offered extra shifts and I believe that carried on but most people like me just worked the four weeks and left on the 23rd.
