BT - Cancellation Fees

I have changed from BT to the Post Office for my landline. I have now been told that on my final bill, I will incur £37.50 for a cancellation fee as I am still within my contract.

This confused me as I had been with BT since Sept 2008 and was on a basic landline contract with free evening and weekend calls. i rang BT, who then told me that as I had moved house in Feb 2010, that ment my contract had been renewed, so I have a contract until Feb 2011!

I wasn't told this when I moved house, nothing had changed just my house. BT are quick to charge people but they can't even get my gender correct! I am a Miss but on all bills I am a MR yet when they send me offers I am a Miss!

I am just confused whether or not the above is correct or not. I have looked through all my previous correspondance with BT and from when I moved house, I just have a letter saying when they are transfering the landline.

I would be grateful for any advice!:j

I moved house recently and, so BT has informed in response to my complaint, verbally agreed to a new 12 month contract. (So, Lozza, yes they do renew your contract when you move. I presume that other telecom companies are able to start up a BT line in a new property, but being stupid I just assumed BT would have to do it and therefore was put in a new contract). Apparently I should have been aware of cancellation charges too but the estimated cost (>£70) shocks me.

I arranged to move line rental to Sky Talk and, upon being informed of the cancellation charge in a BT letter, tried to cancel this. Apparently this is impossible - having started the process now Sky tell me I cannot reverse it without still paying the cancellation fee AND getting a new number when BT takes the line again.
I am in the position of having an unexpected cancellation charge that is impossible to reverse once you find out about it! I can't believe that this is acceptable. (I feel that BT should make an attempt to warn you about the cancellation charge so that you can decide not to go ahead before it becomes irreversible. Sky tells me this is impossible).

When the actual charge is issued, I will ask for it to be broken down. Apparently, cancellation charges have been reduced this month due to Ofcom demands - should it therefore be less than £70?

Did you speak to BT or just Sky, although its not 'slamming' in your case ( a company signing you up without your consent ) there is a process to stop the transfer, after all many people only find out they have been 'slammed' when they get the 'sorry you are leaving' letter, I thought the letter states ' if you dont want this transfer to take place call 0800 ********' etc.
What Sky may be getting at is they (Sky) may charge you for cancelling with them, you were not slammed, you agreed to move to them,if you cancel (with Sky)nothing should happen to your number
You probably need to call BT
