but can someone explain to me what real house price drops meen to FTBs?

I'm reliably informed that it means party time for the FTB with the chocolate and banana heavy portfolio.

Oh dear god, why on earth do I bother?
For once Hamish I concur with something you have said.

Really, why do you bother? You aren't going to change peoples' minds.

It must be some kind of baiting pastime?

This is a most amusing thread.

Haven't laughed that much at a Graham-Hamish ding-dong in ages. Probably ever. Most entertaining.

Score currently standing at Graham 1: Hamish 0.

But I feel confident Hamish will have another go.

What will his next move be? I'm putting my money on repeating previous figures, possibly with a few additional hard-hitting smilies, but could he shock us all and pull some Land Reg figures out of the bag? Some predicions from the CML?

    Can't wait. :)

I have a feeling he doesn't want to look at the Nationwide data. :p

I looked at the data he was sending me, but that seemed to upset him even more. Wonders never cease!
  • So the worst affected are:
    - Northern Ireland - 46%
    - Wales - 10/11%
    - East Anglia - 10%
    - Scotland - 8%
grosse under-estimates in my opinion. certainly round where i live theyve fallen a lot more than this

  • Interesting regarding Northern Ireland. A massive drop. NI seemed to be immune from the madness of Eire, and suddenly , bang. It went crazy. Very late to get into the boom. it may have been the peace protest or copying the " Celtic Tiger", I am not sure. However there boom in house prices has been unbelievable. My business in both the North and South is on the floor. However, in Ireland, north or South it is looking like carnage.

One of my customers in Southern Ireland told me that they used to have the most expensive fields in the world. Companies built houses their, now due to bulldoze them down. Crazy old world.

However, the North West appears to be taking the brunt of the falls.

Not in my part of the North-West, but interesting nevertheless.
But a look at regional data from Halifax – which were last updated at the end of the second quarter in June – shows just how patchy the fuller picture is. For example, average house prices in north-west England have fallen quarter on quarter in every single quarter, bar one, since the first three months of 2008. The buyer of an average home there in 2007, purchased with a typical 10 per cent downpayment, still owes more than their property is worth.

why in Real terms - what does that exactly mean?

As adjusted for your favourite measure of inflation.

E.g. if house prices have fallen by 8% in Scotland and inflation is 4% then real house prices in Scotland have fallen by 12%.
