DRO dishcharged and trying to open new Bank account
I obtained a DRO last year and it ended in July of this year.
Just before I obtained the DRO I was advised to open a basic bank account which I did with the Coop.
When I opened the account I was told that the debit card I would receive would be a normal debit card...although on the surface it looks like a normal debit card, it is in fact an electron card.
You still cant use an electron card everywhere (Asda petrol pumps for example)
I am now getting back on my feet again and am trying to open a standard current account rather than the basic Bank account and applied at the Nationwide (I was refused at the first hurdle)
Does anyone know which Banks would accept me or if there aren't any... how long it will take for me to be able to obtain one?
Thanks

you could try LLoyds basic account the card is proper visa debit like barclays However you can only use their ATMS but the internet banking is good and is updated unlike CO-OP so to can get around that just transfer money to a another account.0 -
Just before I went bankrupt last year I opened a standard Barclays cashcard account and once my bankruptcy was discharged I asked them to issue a Connect Card (Visa not electron) which they did on receipt of my discharge letter.
No bank can refuse you a basic account so long as you have been discharged. The co-op also have a basic account with a Visa Debit card (I have one which I actually opened the day I went bankrupt) so it might be worth asking them about that.
It's really frustrating and you have my sympathy but running your life without a debit card will teach you to budget a little better and be more aware of what you are spending.

Thanks for the message but you seem to have misunderstood my thread!
I already have a basic Bank account with a debit card but its an electron which isn't accepted everywhere so as my DRO has finished now I wanted to open a current account with a normal debit card.
As for saying it will teach me to budget better.... as you have no idea of my circumstances, it would be better for you to keep opinions like that to yourself and not be so judgemental of others!0 -
u could ask the coop to change your card to a visa card, or do what some do and tell then its lost and they will send u a visa card instead of the old electron card. had no probs with mine and can be used in tescos pumps as well. hope that helps.0

while the bankruptcy is on your file, you are going to find it hard to get a 'normal' account. you need to be discharged six years before it stops showing in credit searches.
i have been discharged three years now but i have managed to get a limited credit card and use that for expenditure that won't accept the visa. ost places do accept it now unless it needs to 'hold' your funds.Proud to be Member of BSC #92Hoping to get debt free again :wall::heart2: working hard to make my daughters proud :heart2:0 -
It was my understanding that co-op had upgarded there cards now and they aren't electron cards anymore, the problem usually lies with the retailer not updating their systems to recognise it!
Im not sure you would get a 'normal' current account it can be hit and miss, I know a couple of people ahve been lucky with Nat West though!0 -
Which part of the country do you live in?. Whist I was bankrupt I had just the basic account. Three months ago . about 6 months after discharge I opened an account with N&P (Norwich and Peterborough), they will take ex bankrupts. I have a basic account, but with a Visa and internet access. If you live in the east, maybe worth looking at.0

Just like to say thanks to everyone (especially Paris5000) who answered my question about obtaining a "normal" current Bank account and debit card, after having a basic account with the Coop due to obtaining a DRO 12 months earlier... I managed to open a Lloyds TSB current account with no problems whatsoever. I just walked in, explained the whole situation so that the advisor wouldn't be surprised at my credit check and twenty minutes later, I walked out with a new current account with Visa debit card.0
