Caught by speed camera
Hi,
I've just been caught by a speed camera, I thought the limit was 40 but it must be 30. As it's such a big difference I'm a bit worried about what the punishment will be. I've looked around but it seems to be on the borderline. I've got no points.
Does anyone have an idea of what I'm looking at, will it be three points and £60 or could it be a lot worse than that?

I assume that at this point you know that you've triggered a camera but haven't received any paperwork? If so, then in order to be able to give meaningful comment you'll have to wait until you receive a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP). If you are the registered keeper of the vehicle then the NIP will have to be with you within 14 days.
Bear in mind that a majority of cameras are not fully "armed" and just because you have triggered it doesn't automatically mean that paperwork will follow. I suggest you post back if and when you get anything through the post.My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016).

Thanks for that, no I don't have any paperwork, there was just a big double flash behind me. I'm the registered keeper but not owner (motability car).
Thanks for replying. I'm starting to calm down about it, I was in a bit of a panic when it happened.Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0 -
If you do receive a NIP, keep the envelope, and then report back here.0

At most it'll be £60 + 3 points. Probably not a speed awareness course, though. Shouldn't make too much difference to your insurance.Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0

Won't make any difference to insurance as its a Mobility car.0

you won't be hanged out to dry .
If the NIP arrives and If it is within time limit , you might get a offer of speed awareness course .
40 MPH in 30 MPH zone is at worse a standard 3 points £60 fine . both i and OH were doing the exact same thing in 30 zone , which we had wrongly thought was still the a 40 zone . Mobile cameras probably caught both of us doing 40 Mph , and we heard nothing .
Stop worrying :beer:Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:0 -
Always remember when I told my wife to be careful about her speed as a mobile camera was often located a quarter of a mile up the road.
Seconds later a car started to pull out just as I was passing it on the dual carriageway so I put my foot down to get out of its way and got done by the very camera I was just telling the wife about.
£60 fine 3 points for doing 39mph in a 30 zone.0 -

You could and should have contested it, quoting what is called "duress of circumstances".
According to Wilkinson's Road Traffic Offences, 21st edition, this is "where a defendant had committed an otherwise unlawful act to avoid imminent peril of danger to life or serious injury to himself or some other person for whom he was responsible. The evil must be directed towards the defendant or some other person for whom he had responsibility and could be identified by reference to the action threatened. The evil to be prevented must be greater than the evil done... which should be no more than reasonably necessary to avoid the harm feared".The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.
