Dishwasher or washing up???

Hi,
Apologies if this has been asked before but I have been told that it uses less water to run a dishwasher than to run a bowl of water. Is this an urban myth started to make us feel better about our lazy ways?

I've heard that too & I think the new models are super efficient. However I don't care as a dishwasher is something I'd never be without. I hate washing up even more than ironing... :rolleyes:0

Al Mac - how can you possibly like ironing!
I avoid it at all costs and have been known to just iron the bits that might get seen!!!

Have a look at Which? magazine (free in local library) back copies for the most recent dishwasher review article. Basically they say that dishwashers are much more efficient now, particularly water-wise if you wash up a few times a day. You need to look for a fairly recent one, preferably an A rated energy model (Bosch are very reliable - look at the comparison websites and quidco for the best price), so it will be expensive to begin with. You could also think about getting one that has a delay start, so you can set it to go on at night if you have economy 7 electricity. I hate washing up, which I always left to my wife who doesn't mind it  but I am quite happy putting stuff away so it has saved a lot of time for her:j also our teaspoons are no longer brown - the dishwasher gets all the tanin off them. The other good thing in a small kitchen is that you don't have piles of washing up sitting by the sink. dishwashing tablets can be pricey - Lidl do perfectly good all in one tablets and Wilkinson are also cheap I hear.

If you want to save money washing dishes I think you have to stick with the washing up bowl though.
Think of the electricity you're using.
I hate doing dishes, we don't have a washer. If we did, you know we'd use it.
But for now I'll keep my 'Fairy Soft' hands.0 -
Don't forget that you can get a lot more than one bowls worth of washing up in a dishwasher. I think that's why they compare favorably with the old-fashioned method.0

Wrooooonnnng! You'd be wasting a lot of water, Thames Water said that people waste SIX LITRES of water by leaving the tap on while brushing, and I think it is every time you brush, I can tell because it takes less than a minute to fill a two litre bottle. Imagine leaving the tap on while brushing and then imagine washing dishes. Many dishwashers use 12 litres so if you left the tap off while brushing (twice a day) you can save water for the dishwasher! And save more by not washing up.
That means if you wash up you will use more water but if you use a dishwasher you'll use more electricity. Which is more important? Well I say a dishwasher, may be a bit more on the bill but then there's leaving the light on, using a big TV, leaving the TV on standby, useless electrical gadgets...
We had one from August 05 but it was like September when we really properly used it, definately when people came round, and most evenings now!0 -
There are just the two of us in the house now, but I wouldn't be without my dishwasher!
They seem to last forever - I'm on my second in 26 years.
Mine is plumbed to the hot water so it doesn't cost much to run (hubby is a fuel merchant so we get fuel at cost), and it's very water efficient.
I use a rinse cycle every day and only run it 2 or 3 times a week, when it's full.I let my mind wander and it never came back!0 -
Wouldn't be without my dishwasher either, I only use it every other day and would washup 2 or 3 times a day without it.... so I reckon for the little electricity it uses it saves gallons of water.....:T#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j
