incredibly noisy boiler

Usually in the morning, I get an almighty clattering from the boiler when it turns on. Has happened previous but is more common now since has been relativley unused in the winter. happens almost every morning these last 2 weeks.

I have checked all radiators for air & there is no problem there, the water that comes out of the radiators is quite clean. all radiators in the house get hot all over.

I'm stuck for ideas, do i need to add something to the system or is my boiler on its way out? (15 years old i think)

I'm assuming it is not a condensing boiler as it is so old. Is it a room sealed boiler with fan, ie the air has a split common intake and exhaust? If so it may be the beaings on the fan that have gone allowing the fins to rub on the casing.
  • I had my fan go also and it was really noisy. I should think it was that.

We lived in our previous house for over 10 years.
The whole time we lived there the boiler crashed and banged really loudly.
(Good job it was in the garage!)
We had plumbers come and look when we first moved in and had it serviced 8 or nine times but it never cured the noise!
Visitors were really concerned but we used to just shrug our shoulders and say " oh it's just the boiler".
It was still going strong when we moved out and rarely let us down.
We just got used to it!

Could possibly be air trapped in the boiler. Look to see if there is a bleed valve somewhere.

  • happened again this morning, an awful lot. It also kept cutting out if that makes sense?

i mean the boiler stays lit but doesn't pump water the radiators.

its actually going mental now, shalli keep it running to try and clear what ever it is? or shut it off and call out the professionals??

You know it will wok perfect if/when they get here

sounds like the a problem with the pump sticking or seizing. the water will be getting too hot in the boiler because the pump isnt pumping it round the system and will start to boil, hence all the banging and clattering. you may be able to free the pump by unscrewing the small cover on the front (about the size of a 10 pence piece, and inserting a small screwdriver into the pump shaft and giving it a turn. if it starts spinning again you should be ok, if not you will prob need a new pump.
