Economy 7 meter incorrect

thought i was been proactive and saving myself money by ringing up my electrity company and asking to move to a cheaper tarriff as found on a comparison site until they asked me to double check my day anmd night figures for economy 7 as we were using more electricity at night, i thought this could be down to our hot tub and office in the house. I wrote down the figure for Rate 1 and then the figure for Rate 2 and checked after 30mins and the figure for Rate 2 changed which is the night figure. i then realised the energy company were reading the meters the wrong way round. using my day figure as my night figure. I have contacted EON and they are going to look into to it and recalculate the bills and let me know within 2 - 3 weeks how much we owe.

I am worried as we have been on economy 7 since June 2005 - that is 5 years... that is a long time

I want to know how to play the energy company and where i stand legally as technically they installed the meter incorrectly but then we should have noticed as well. I want to know if i can haggle the price we owe as the day rate is more expensive than the night rate. Also just want to if there is any way i can roughly work out what we owe. I want to know if EON negotiate in siutations like this.

The day rate reading should be - 31074.46
The night reading should be - 09030.35

That in itself is meaningless, you need to know how many units you have used.

The good thing is that the customer always comes out of these situations a winner.

It is probable that the company will only backcharge you for a year.

Just wait and see what the company propose and then post the details on here and you will get good advice whether to accept or negotiate!

    Hi pritti,

This sounds like a classic case of transposed readings ( day and night being billed the wrong way round)

It's really good that you have spoken to E.ON to get this sorted, the first thing to do is get the new corrected bill, negotiating the bill may depend on a few things, have you queried this is the past, have you provided readings to E.ON and so on.

These accounts are looked at on an individual basis.

If you need my help, just let me know, I would also be interested to know the outcome if you don't mind :o

If the meter has been installed incorrectly (which would mean night circuit attached to day), it would switch everything on for longer periods and your bill would be high. The other similiar part would be that the electrician wired your circuits wrong, then the Supplier wouldn't know until you spotted things switching on at unexpected times.

They could just be taking the reads the wrong way around which just means they need to replace your bills to correct it. This may involve cutting a deal or just admitting liability (since this would be their error as they are told when the meter is installed, which way the read go!) and writing off any excess.

Then there are some meters out there where they have to be transposed to bill. You could have one of those but you need to call your Supplier and let them sort it out for you.

In the old Eastern Electricity area (basically Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, some of Bedfordshire, North London) the traditional way of doing things has been rate 2 is the day reading & rate 1 is the night reading. This has caused confusion since other suppliers have been allowed to fit their own meters within these geographical areas, since most other geographical areas termed rate 1 as the day reading and rate 2 as the night.
