I've just got a Kindle and so far have been using it only for Free books from Amazon.
my local library (Herts) have a website where you can download ebooks for use on ebook readers for free.
How do I go about getting library ebooks onto my Kindle?
The library website has loads of info on the different programs you can download but I have no idea which one is right for a Kindle
I'd be so grateful if someone can tell me in non-techy terms how to do this

My library e-books aren't compatible with the Kindle....#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

What format are the library ebooks in? ie what extension do they have on the file name?0

I just had a look at Calibre and it seems self explanatory, you download to the Calibre file and then hook up your e-reader and it will convert the book to the correct format... might have a go at that myself.. but I am always a bit wary of downloading stuff..:o#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

Calibre is excellent and so if you use http://calibre-ebook.com/ then it should be safe to download. But the books you get from the library or amazon or some other retailers have DRM in them and calibre cannot re-format them , it can copy them to your Kindle and if they are the correct format you can read them on the kindle until they expire.
Of course there are others out there that have posted on the internet ways of getting round the DRM but of course if you are in the UK then that is illegal at worst and not fair at the least.
Edit Look at the wiki for DRM here4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . Aint no sunshine ☀️ Octopus gas fixed dec 24 @ 5.74 tracker again+ Octopus Intelligent Flux leccy0 -
Thanks for that how would I know if the books have DRM in them ?#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

If you buy/lend them the online store will expect you to register your machine, or pc software and then it will work on your machine, some stores use adobe digital editions which means you need that to download on the pc, AND THEY WILL BE drm'ED also some books are sold/lent using mobipocket software , or microsoft reader etc. However there are also lots of free books that do not have DRM eg the gutenproject has lots of out of copyright books, and calibre should be able to convert them for kindle. Some retailers also sell you none DRM books but I have not yet found any in the UK. I have used fictionwise.com in the states they have some good prices (but it depends if your credit card charges the earth for foreign transactions. Also some of the US retailers cannot sell some books in the UK because there are non-competetion agreements with some UK publishers/distributers.
Sorry to ramble on a bit but I hope this helps4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . Aint no sunshine ☀️ Octopus gas fixed dec 24 @ 5.74 tracker again+ Octopus Intelligent Flux leccy0 -

So, it looks as if library ebooks are not going to work.
I have a kindle, I have downloaded calibre and i have downloaded an ebook from the Herts elibrary (which i am a member of).
I managed to get Calibre to find the downloaded ebook from the e library (not easy) and then I wanted to convert it and send it to my kindle but no joy as it is DRM so calibre can't do anything with it.
I'm a bit gutted. I've always read loads of library books and assumed i would be able to use the elibrary with my kindle.
I'm not sure how much I will use the kindle if i have to buy every single book I want on it and can't get ebooks on it from the library.
Very disappointing
So, now i don't understand why people with Kindles bother downloading Calibre if it doesn't resolve this. What is the point of it?MS Stalwart. Used site for >10 years :jMake Do, Mend and Minimise member - focussing on upcycling/repurposing and sewing0
