Working tax credits in first year of self employment?

Hi all,

On another thread someone told me I was entitled to working tax credits and should apply now to get some money before April.

I have had a look at the online calculator thingy on the wtc website and I am a little confused (not for the first time when dealing with a government website)

I worked full time until January of this year and received two months pay upon losing my job. My last full pay was at the end of March. I went on Jobseekers at the end of June and came off in at the end of August. I set up as self employed in mid April but didn't start earning much or working 30+ hours until August.

Now when I go on the calculator it asks what my earnings where from apr 2009 to 2010. So that would be my pay from my previous job. If I put that in then I would not be entitled to anything.

So my question is do I wait a year from starting self employment to claim wtc or do you claim it in advance with projected earnings?

Excuse my stupidity.

  • Provide last years correct figures, and see what happens. Chances are, if your earnings were high last year, you will be provisionally awarded nothing. However, when it comes to finalising this years claim next april, depending on your 10/11 earnings, you may well recieve a lump sum back payment.
  • You provide them with the correct figures for last year, once you receive your letter confirming one way or another, you ring them up, tell them that this year will be less and can they adjust it. Good luck :-)
