Caseya, you will be able to see if the band has changed on your old house by checking the last column titled 'effective from'. A date shown here shows it has been altered at some stage. Also click on the actual address. If you then get an option to 'view banding history', that will tell you if the band has been altered and what it was originally. If it HAS been altered, with an effective date of before you left, the council should refund you on request.

I have successfully reduced the banding on my property and received payment back from the Council. Is there any scope to request interest from the council for the overpayments ''

Philip, someone called David Harrison is the person who many pages ago told us he had received interest back from the Council on his rebate. I would love to know how he did it. I'd like my interest back on my rebate of £2906. David, where are you when we need you??????

    hi byebyebandG.

    Hope you're enjoying your rebate!

if you can find him on the database how about private mailing David Harrison?.

I didn't know what my original post way back in August 2005 would lead to !

  • SORRY IF THIS POST IS IN THE WRONG AREA

    Hi All

Great posts, have followed Council Tax rebanding

Have been on VOA site, and looked at our banding which is marked up as B, Band review pending. Have read their explanation of this and it seems to suggest that even now we have modernised, the rating which was A should have perhap stayed the same as the property has not be sold, am I right in thinking this?

We bought the property a small detached bunglow in 1983, which was unmodernised, no hot water, heating and only two bedrooms. We paid around 23,000 at the time. We live in a close and are the only bunglow of this age so have had problems rating against the other properties in the area. The other properties are modern terraces and are rated B along with some bigger properties with higher ratings.

All advise would be appreciated Thanks in advance

I suppose you will have to find out what similar properties sold for in 1991 in your area, if possible. Even though the calculator may show a low band based on your purchase price, it probably wouldn't be relevant.

    Hi,

I'm pleased to hear of so much success and I to would like to try for a reduction / rebate but I have been unable to access the VOA site. Even at 0200 hours this morning the site was too busy(see below). Martin what have you started!

"We are currently experiencing a higher demand than usual for our website. If you are unable to access the pages you require at the moment, please try again later."

    Try the backdoor:

It worked for me! We have to thank peter999 for this, I think.
    Reclaimed thanks to this site:

Last night I checked the banding of every road around us I could think of. Most flats around as are Band D, same as ours. Some are Band C but I am assuming it could be because they only have one bedroom as opposed to our two. But how can I find this out? I do not live in a rural area where I know all my neighbours and their house layouts intimately. I live in a heavily built up area in London's Docklands with hundreds of flats around me, and I can't really knock on everyone's door (especially in London not such a good idea) and ask them to tell me how many bedrooms they've got, can I? So how else can I find this out?

  • Hi guys I'm new to the forums and in need of a bit of advice.

I read the article about council tax and followed the instructions given. Our house is listed as band B on the scottish assessors website but we've been paying band D.

According to our calculations, the value of our home in 1991 was £23,124. That is in Band A. Would it be worth our while having our band re-assessed?

    Thanks!

  • Does anyone know of any other HPI to use. I have looked at my home and using the provided keeps us in the same band by £400. However, I put int he details of my parents home which they bought in 78 and they have calculated the value now o be about half of what it actually is.

I notice they lump all of Yorkshire and Humberside together. We live in Leeds and I suspect the price fluctuations are a little greater.

    Any help?
Giving up is easy...... just keep on trying!
  • The VOA does not use HPI all bandings are form actual sales in 1991

    As for the improved bungalow

All improvements upto 1993 will in included any after 1993 will only be added to the value after a re sale.

All properties are deemed to be in a reasonable estate of repair.

    Hop this helps:T

I believe you can ask the VOA for this information. Failing that, you could go and ask a few neighbours. That might help you to see if you are on the right lines. Chances are they've seen or at least heard about the program anyway.

    Hope that helps!

Perhaps anyone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I would have thought that if you are down as band B the first thing to do would be to ask your council why you are being charged band D. They might refer you to the VOA, but you should be paying the rate for the band you've been valued for. Once that is sorted out then you need to see which is the correct banding.

    Hope that helps!
