Hundreds of thousands of people, some of whom are on MSE. Did you have a particular question in mind?.If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -

The reason why you believe your band is incorrect should be your starting point. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
Hi all,
been living in my current property since it was built back in 2001. Received notification from the Valuations Office out the blue this year THEY thought the banding was wrong, outcome of which it was and they've downgraded the banding which after some hassle has resulted in a repayment for past 15 years :j
Just wondering do I have a case against them for compensation/ loss of interest?
Many thanks in advance.0 -

There's no provision in legislation for them to pay compensation or interest.
CraigI no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -

A slightly different question.
I currently reside in a band D property three bedroom detached and have done so for the last 25 years. There are an equal amount of 4 bedroom properties on the same site of 61 houses these properties have until recently been in band E. A number of the owners of the 4 bedroom properties have recently appealed their banding and as a result have had their banding reduced to D the same as my own.
Q Are their any grounds for me to appeal this decision on the basis that the 4 bedroom houses have a greater footprint than my own.
Q Up to year 2003 all the 4 bedroom properties had a Rightmove 1991 valuation in excess of the £88000 for band D.
Q A near by building site have similar (not the same) properties as my own in band C
Q All the 3 bedroom properties on my estate have had a 1991valuation within the band D £68000 to £88000 since they were constructed (1990)0 -

Absolutely none, you can only appeal a decision in respect of your own CT band
Q Up to year 2003 all the 4 bedroom properties had a Rightmove 1991 valuation in excess of the £88000 for band D.
Firstly what happened after 2003, secondly house price indices are inaccurate, thirdly see previous reply
Q A near by building site have similar (not the same) properties as my own in band C
You could ask the VOA for a review of your band, but you have no right of appeal if they say your band is OK as you are outside time limit to make an appeal.
Q All the 3 bedroom properties on my estate have had a 1991valuation within the band D £68000 to £88000 since they were constructed (1990)
Then Band D may well be correct for the 3 bed properties
It is perfectly possible for 3 and 4 bedroom houses to be in the same CT bandIf you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0
