stevepam - there is no obligation for a council to pay interest on refund of overpayment of CT as the legislation makes no provision for such payment. So they will not pay any interest.

    Boo Hoo

Just been refused a lower band valuation from C to B .
passed both criteria on Martin's article check so had a go.

They are satisfied that the value reflects April 91 values.
Reasons they give for discrepancies I found in other similar houses bands .
"Other houses in lower bands nearby, may have been extended after but not yet sold since 912.(I doubt that)
"Lowered a a result of an appeal.(I doubt that)
"Lower as a result of an error."(more likely)

They will consider if the bandings of any others need to be increased.

    No appeal.

    Oh well they replied quickly.
  • avjb inspected my house and have now had a letter telling me they have amended my band from c to b with effect from dec 1993 and the revelant billing authority will be advised, can someone tell me if i need to apply for a rebate or does this mean it will just be automatic. thankyou.

  • lincroft thats twice you have helped me thankyou
  • Story so far; My house is in band D, I checked as Martin suggested the rest of the street's banding; one house, which is massive, in band E, the rest in band C (10 houses) I found that mine was rebanded when I purchased in December 1999 from C to D, as the previous owners extended by one room behind the garage.

I called local VOA today; 'as the property was extended by 20metre's they were allowed to reband'; basically tuff luck to me.

One house in the street has had double extention, but not been rebanded as not been resold, One has converted the garage into a business; not been rebanded as not resold. The one that bothers me is one has had extention same as mine and was sold in 2004 and again in 2007?

Can anyone help; can I appeal, is it worth it?

    In a word, no.
    There is no appeal.
  • Hello all,

I have just been looking in to Council Tax rebanding and I'm unsure whether it is worth trying or not.

Basically I have lived in this house since Dec 1995 bought it for £32,950. Now doing the checks it looks like it was worth slightly more (but well under £40,000) in 1991. I have looked at other houses in my road and all are in the same band as me, B. However I believe a few of them are 3 bedroom (we are only 2) and it is these that come up as slightly over £40,000 when doing the checks, all those with 2 bedrooms come up as under £40,000.

I looked in to this before but a friend told me that only flats etc are in Band A so I didn't bother. But now I have read the guide I realise that is not true.

What do you think is it worth having a go?
