Found a hair in an ASDA brand cake - what should I do?

While eating one of the ASDA own brand caramel slices I was halfway through eating it when i noticed there was a human hair encased within the upper layer of chocolate. The fact that the chocolate surrounded it showed definitely that it was not one of my own hairs but the cake had been contaminated by someone else.
I bought this pack of cakes on wednesday night, and as I say it is an ASDA own brand.
What should I do here? Do I just take them back to the shop?
Obviously I dont think that a simple refund is acceptable here. What should I expect them to do? What would be an appropriate compensation, because I am disgusted to find hairs int he middle of biscuits!?
Can anyone advise please?

No production can be 100% contaminant free, especially when it comes to hair as even the best hair net can't be 100% effective.
You can take it back for a refund/replacement or you could phone CS and kick up a stink, might get some vouchers. Anything more than that, such as the inevitable suggestions of health & safety or trading standards is really just a waste of time imo, you'll rarely get very far with it. It's certainly disgusting, but not in any way a health hazard. We have removed your signature - please contact the forum team if you are not sure why - Forum Team0 -

What tends to happen in these cases if I just return it to the shop?0 -
I bought a fruit salad from Tesco once and there was a hair in it. I took it back to the shop and they gave me my money back and a £10 voucher. I didn't even really complain, just told them that it had made me feel sick and when they asked if I wanted another I turned them down! Had gone off the idea at that point!0

So it would be probably better writing to ASDA and enclosing the sample?
You would probably get the same response if you wrote to them. If they bother to reply back to you. At least going into the store you will get a refund and maybe a gift card too.
If you are looking for any more compensation than the above, then like previous posters have said, you will be dissapointed. No production can be 100% contaminant free and one strand of hair won't be taken seriously.0 -
If you're bothered about a refund don't send the sample or let them take it from you in store. I found a piece of metal that broke a tooth in a bolognese. Foolishly I let them take it to "examine". They managed to mysteriously lose it by the time I went to get it back about an hour later (after deciding I shouldn't have let them take it) so I couldn't make a claim.
Personally I wouldn't bother about finding a hair. But if you really are fussed, write the customer services. Don't send the offending article though - just a photo.0 -
You should at least get £1000 and free biscuits for life i reckon , OP i am so sorry you went through such a traumatic experience and hope you recover soon.0

Would just put the hair to one side and carry on enjoying the cake. If you had a cake from family and found a hair would you say anything or throw the cake away?
It's not like it will kill you!£4000 in 2011 - £48.88/£40000 -
All ASDA brand products have details on the packaging about what to do if you're not satisfied with the product.0
