Council erected new lampost that shines into our bedroom !

I got home form work yesterday to see that our local council have put up new street lights on our section of road.

problem being the one new light is directly outside our house (opposite side of the road). It is about 5 foot taller than the old one, and I assume has some form of halogen bulb, as it is ALOT brighter !

When we went to go to bed last night, and drew the curtains, this new, more powerful, and higher light, shines right through our curtains.

the old one was not as bright, and lower, so didnt make a massive difference, but this one no makes the room light, all night (as it is on all night)

we were not infromed of this at all - and I am just wondering if there is anything we can do about it ? even if it is getting a decent set of blackout curtains from the council so we can get the room dark again !!!

Thanks

Ian

You can but ask. :) I suspect you will be told 'tough' (but in a polite way, lol).

You never know, you may get 'a man who can' on a good day and he's into goodwill gestures. I doubt it though. We had new lamposts recently too, I agree they are much much brighter but the brightness helps stop the yobs hanging around as much so they're welcome around here.

Good luck but start saving anyway. ;)

Councils are quite frankly a law unto themselves. By all means try contacting them to ask. If you're successful, can you come back and tell us all how you managed it?! On the very odd occasion I've written to or emailed my council over the last ten years I've never once received a response :D

I think redsclubbedup has accepted that this might be the only solution. But will the council pay?! :D

  • We had similar problem. The residents on the street sat in two camps . Those who said the new extra brightness was welcome, and those who hated it.

We hated it and rang the council to complain . Couple of conversations and a visit and they installed what could be best described as a shade to the streetlight. This channeled the light onto the street and put the houses into part shade.

Not ideal but better than nothing

And no -they wouldn't pay for blackout blinds - But I would recommend giving them a ring and complaining

We have a streetlight outside our house and wouldn't have it any other way - no need to use the outside light and no need for a nightlight.

I have one directly angled at my room, its an older lap but still very bright, luckily i have blinds so my room is fairly dark however, if i roll over i may just end up with a strip of light shining in my eye from where the cords run down the slats. Its irritating at best lol.

Contact the council and ask them to fit a shade.

We had a street light on our front garden, well to the side. Council kept smashing up our hedges to do maintenance on it, and although we never said anything to them, a couple of weeks ago they removed it and put a new one on the pavement. It shines directly into my bedroom window. Urgh. Rang them, they said they'd put a shade on it to limit the shine into the room and appeared the next day to do it.

We had replacement lighting in our street recently (I think they are to bring them into compliance with EU Standards or something). Our council provided all the residents with a notification advising on the dates for the works etc. The note also advised that if the new lighting caused a problem (such as yours), the affected resident could request a diffuser for the offending light.

    This was Leeds City Council.

You need to contact the street lighting department of your local council, and they will more than likely address the problem.

My parents have the same problem as you OP -they rang Derby City council lighting dept and asked for a shade to be put on the light which was shining directly into their bedroom, they were given a job number to track the progress and within 3 days they came and put the cap on. Makes a big difference.:T
