Thats world has gone now I know, its just such a pity.

    I do agree it's a pity.

But I agree with dunstonh, it's that way because customers (in general) aren't loyal and the bottom line is that they don't (on the whole) appreciate good service.

For example see above, someone boasting that they got really cheap insurance. The regulars on here know that if they claim they'll find out exactly how cheap it is.
It's the customers that have driven business the way it is not the companies.
Look at RyanAir. It's cheap, but people are buying the product in droves. They also like to laugh and complain about it, but WE are demanding it.

I chose my insurance on service and go with quality companies for higher price (like Hiscox) but I'm not the norm. A lot of people get the cheapest off an internet search engine with no thought for service and then find out later if they have a claim that they bought something cheap.

So I agree it's a pity, but WE ordered it !!

We have demanded RyanAir, factory farming etc.
If people were prepared to pay more for something different then business would provide it.
Business by definiteion only provides what the market demands.

    chicken or egg.....

the other argument is that punters, when faced with being treated like cash cows with added poor service if they have the temerity to claim/cancel/alter something, are saying bug ger it, I'll go for the cheapest.

That's how I (and I'm suspect many others) treat car insurance, as an necessary evil and go for the cheapest that will give me the required bit of paper and fully expecting to have to argue/complain/FOS if I need to make a claim.

look at this thread as an example of what i mean https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2776488

This is Standard Operating Practice in the motor insurance business. They will try and ramp up the premium each year as their PR people issue a stream of press releases informing the public that motor insurance rates are one the rise.
