How do I get info from a laptop to a desktop?

My desktop is our main computer and the laptop is an old one with a cracked screen but it is still usable.
I've typed some letters in on the laptop so my OH could use the internet on the desktop but have realised that our 5yr old DS has wrecked our memory pen so it won't work now
I've got network cables that I'm not using so I wondered if I could somehow use them but don't know what I'm doing really. So I don't know if it will work at all or whether we need software to go with it?
Can anyone help please?

Probably the quickest suggestion - unless you want to spend possibly quite some time sharing folders on either or both the PC and the laptop, and connecting both to the router's ethernet ports, or directly connecting PC to laptop via a crossover ethernet patch cable...easiest way is buy another pendrive they are really cheap these days and keep it out of reach of 5 year old0 -
If there are not too many letters then email them to yourself/OH, open email from desktop and save it. Besides you will always have a copy on the net which can be looked up from any pc.More0

There's also a video at the bottom of the page.0 -
if you have a hotmail account you can use skydrive exactly like a pendrive, and if both computers have either vista or windows 7 then you can install windows live mesh from live essentials on both computers and then you can set any file on either computer to always stay in sync (very useful if you are always moving files between computers)0

google file and print sharing or 2.5" usb caddy, the latter option allows you to use the old disk for backups.!!

If you don't have email set up on the laptop, just use hotmail or yahoo mail or one of the other free ones and send the file(s) as an attachment. If there are not too many letters then email them to yourself/OH, open email from desktop and save it. You can connect loads of PCs to a router at the same time. Everything you need is an place, it is just a matter of setting up the softwareMics_chick wrote: »No but is it possible to connect more than 1 to a standard router or do I need a special one?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature.
