Acer you pay for what you get, dell very expensive as are sony . Toshiba are expensive to repair but are good machines. Avoid advent, I would recommend Aldi's medion ones that come with a 3 year warranty and unlike others cover the batterys

Why don't you look at the sticky thread dedicated to looking at laptops available within this range but better value than the one you found?

Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

    Disagree on the first part.

I've fixed laptops for 15 years. There is no cost increase in repairing a Toshiba as any other machine. In fact, their current range are cheaper to repair thanks to putting the ever-vulnerable DC socket on a cable rather than directly on the motherboard.
  • I have a 3yrs old acer aspire 5630, I would not buy another, it was £500.
It's so flimsy compared with a toshiba and dell.

Im on my 3rd charger and the 2nd battery I bought needs replacing, as it doesnt last 30mins on full charge now.

Also the hinges went very tight last year, they really need replacing but Im not spending more money on it coz at the lower left hand corner of the screen casing, it's cracked thru, I dont know how coz Im very careful with it.
Plus there's a hairline crack of 3cms about 2 cms down from the edge of keyboard in the plastic casing. It's going from the edge of the laptop and travelling inwards. Also a new similar crack 3" further down the edge, they are on the surface inside the laptop, so you see them when you open it up.

I would def look for more metal next time to support and protect the laptop.

I always shut down my laptop after use and last yr it just would not start up again, I had to reinstall everything.

Taking your post as three seperate points:

    1) Chargers and batteries. Batteries fail, the technology is not good, but did you follow basic instruction on not leaving them plugged into the mains continously etc? Chargers, similarly, only generally break if they're mistreated. I've got customers who break a charger every six months, others that have had the same charger with the laptop six years.

    2) More metal - doesn't happen. There's less and less metal in a laptop to meet consumer demands of a lighter product.

    3) Having to reinstall once in a while is not the fault of the laptop - that's Windows.
