How long does it take for a Cheque to Clear from the same bank ?

Does anyone know how long it takes for an RBS > RBS or Natwest > Natwest cheque to clear.

The guy on the phone told me it was a normal clearing cycle, but i'm not sure he's right.

I know for sure that a Halfax > Halifax cheque clears at the end of the day, and instantly if you ask them at the cashier desk.

It is correct to be told the standard clearing cycle.

The only way it could be same day is if the cheque is deposited at the account holding branch.

No - all Halifax - Halifax cheques go through the normal clearing cycle. But if you ask the cashier, they can make the money available for withdrawal instantly.

(Note that where I say "Halifax", I mean all Halifax and Bank of Scotland personal accounts. It doesn't make any difference what branch the accounts are held at and where the cheque is paid in.)

That's not possible. The cheques have to go for clearing, therefore they would only show on your account the following day at the earliest.

  • Barclays house cheques, that is drawn on the same sort code, which could be any branch within a cluster, clear on day 2, when day 0 is the crediting day. It used to be day 1 but was increased due to fraud.

That doesn't mean the cheque has cleared, just means the money is available for you.

You can spend it, and if the cheque bounced, you would find the money removed from your account.

That was lucky normally it would have to go through the 2-4-6 clearing process.
