Graduated 5 years ago, postgrad now, can I get a student account?

Options
Hey,

The advisers in the banks near me seem surprisingly clueless about this so if anyone could help me here that would be appreciated.

My brief story:
- graduated from uni with a BSc in July 2005
- worked for a couple of years
- have just started a MSc that will last 12 months.

Q: Are there any banks that will give me an interest-free overdraft?

I've already had a 'student' account when I was a student the last time around, I'm told I can't have another and what graduate schemes I've seen seem restricted to 3 years 'post graduation'. Are there any folk here who have been in a similar situation?

Any help on this would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Adam.

  • Who said you couldn't have another?

I had my first student account with HSBC, which was then converted to a graduate account. 2 years later I started a postgrad course - I just took my certificate of student status into the branch, told them I was a student again and they converted the account to a student account again (with interest free overdraft).

If it is your current bank telling you that they can't convert you back to a student account, simply open one with another bank ;) Don't bother specifying you are a postgrad, it just confuses them! :rotfl:
  • I agree with the last statement - dont tell them you are a postgrad unless they ask. They cant possibly say that you lied about your status if they dont ask the question in the first place, and so shouldnt have the right to take the facility away if they then find out!! If they did then I am sure a lawyer would have something to say about it...

but you can tell them you're a postgrad and it shouldn't make a difference.... it didn't with natwest (i was a student for 8 years all in and they do start to notice it's more than the average 3!)! just show student id and then they can convert a graduate account back to a student one. pick a branch on campus where the staff are more likely to have done it before. if your current bank says no, visit some more and find one that does.
