M&S Gift card - will it ever arrive?

I ordered an M&S gift card for a friend as appreciation for putting us up for a day whilst in Devon. I ordered it on 16th September and since then have had 6 emails each informing me of a further delay. The current delivery date is mid October. I have emailed them and contacted them by phone. They say that my order is 'in shipping' and therfore I can't cancel it. I have no idea when it will be sent as I can't trust any date they give.
Has anyone else had any similar problems and does anyone know a way by which I could cancel?
