How Can I Tell If An Electrician Is Qualified?

How can I tell if an electrician is qualified - is there any certificate/qualification they should have to prove they are qualified?

That just shows we're registered with a Part P registration scheme and can self-certify notifiable works as being compliant with Part P of the building regs. True, we have to be assessed as a qualified electrician to register with one of these schemes but that's not really the essence of proving a qualified electrician, as not all work is Part P notifiable and many electricians don't register with a Part P scheme. Part P doesn't apply in Scotland anyway, only England and Wales.
Honeywes, a qualified electrician will have City and Guilds certificates in "being an electrician" {in lay-peoples terms!} (City & Guilds 2330 or 233 or 2360 or 236) and "understanding the current 17th edition wiring rules" (C&G2382). Ask them for theirs, we're only too glad to prove ourselves - unlike the cowboys. No qualifications, no job!0 -
