pet insurance: is their a complaints ombudsman?

We knew no better and took out older pet insurance with E&L. We have an entirely genuine and expensive claim for nearly £1000 with them as our beloved pet is now very sick and has been in hospital with the vet trying to save his life for quite a while. They are looking for a way not to pay, which every vet I've spoken to tells me is what they known for. I can't now take out insurance with anyone else, as the current problem is chronic and will be excluded.
Is there anyone I can get involved to help me to get them to settle what is a genuine claim? Is there an insurance ombudsman.
They seem immune to the bad publicity they get on this site. I didn't know about this site before I took out the insurance.

Insurance comes under the duristriction of the FOS as pointed out above.
The FOS however will only become involved in a complaint once you have received a final written response from the insurance company. All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers
