Slow Cores

Why would 3 of my 4 cores on my Q8300 processor only be running at 2Ghz and one at the correct 2.5Ghz ?
According to Piriform Speccy......the multiplier is incorrectly set to 6.0 on 3 cores - this is not adjustable from within the BIOS

Cheap chip? Might not have been stable at the higher speed so they reduced them.

  • Out of interest, I looked at my Q8300 and I have 2 running at the correct speed and 2 running at a slower speed.

I assume yours was store bought rather than a self build as well? There was nothing about defective chips mentioned in the product description...

So there's nothing that I can do ?
ie) Is there no software that I can download to at least try increasing it again ?
According to http://software.intel.com/en-us/forums/showthread.php?t=70222 it is due to Speedstep - which I didn't think the Q8300 had ?

Yours is running considerably hotter than mine too - if Speccy is to be believed ?

It's supposed to run slower when it doesn't have anything to do. Disable SpeedStep if you want to force it to run full speed all the time.
  • I may have found an answer. Apparently if the CPU isn't being used, it will decrease the speed in order to save power. Which makes sense, because my computer is now doing nothing, and:

    Core 0
    Core Speed 1999.9 MHz
    Multiplier x 6.0
    Bus Speed 333.3 MHz
    Rated Bus Speed 1333.3 MHz
    Temperature 40 °C

    Core 1
    Core Speed 1999.9 MHz
    Multiplier x 6.0
    Bus Speed 333.3 MHz
    Rated Bus Speed 1333.3 MHz
    Temperature 37 °C
    Thread 1
    APIC ID 1
    Core 2
    Core Speed 1999.9 MHz
    Multiplier x 6.0
    Bus Speed 333.3 MHz
    Rated Bus Speed 1333.3 MHz
    Temperature 37 °C
    Thread 1
    APIC ID 2
    Core 3

    Multiplier x 6.0
    Bus Speed 333.3 MHz
    Rated Bus Speed 1333.3 MHz

All 4 are now running at 2Ghz. Clever...:D

It's usually in the BIOS. Setting the appropriate Power Scheme in Windows can also disable it - Google is your friend.

Given it will instantly throttle up if a task requires it, why would you want to waste money by disabling it?
  • why do you want to disable something which reduces power (and £) when not required?

if you really insist on running at full speed even when most of those cpu cycles are gonna be wasted, then disable EIST and the C1E in BIOS
